Day 9: The Asheville Tourists

We were up and out of the beach house by 6:30 and had to leave a note since nobody else was up. Yeah us!

We rolled into Asheville around 1 p.m., dropped our stuff at the hotel and headed to historic McCormick Filed and our Bojangles Dugout Suite seats. These seats are billed as super up close to the action, which is not false. However, they fail to leave out the fact that even with the free eats and drinks, a la the Green Seats at Busch, sitting in these seats on a 95-degree, sunny Sunday afternoon in July is probably not the brightest idea for the sweaty gentleman. And since I can’t get Botox injections over my entire body, I suffered mightily. There was a short reprieve while a faux raincloud mocked me as it passed overhead, but the devil’s furnace returned and my skin is now a nice shade of pink.

They announced the crowd at 1,772. I counted maybe 300. I know, like MLB, they count tickets sold and not turnstile counts, but seriously, announcing nearly six times the actual attendance is a joke. Maybe I’m wrong and they were hiding 1,500 people somewhere, but I think I’d notice a mob that size. The Tourists won the game and we ran for the exits.

We left the game and went to the mall, yes, the mall. We had a massive downpour for about ten minutes while we were inside and came out to a more humid mess. We decided to drive around Asheville as Julia wanted to see the Biltmore Mansion or, as I like to call it, Anderson Cooper’s house. It was already closed for the day, which we knew, but we wanted to see if we could see any of it from the road. We could not. And we have since come to find that tickets cost $59 per person for the tour. Really? I’d rather go to Six Flags, Disneyland, Alcatraz, pretty much anywhere for $59!

We then headed to downtown Asheville to find Doc Chey’s Noodle House, where they tout “Peace. Love. Noodles.” I chose peace, love and rice instead and it was quite tasty. After dinner, we strolled around the area for some photos and headed back to the hotel.

In a few hours, we’ll head out to Kodak, Tennessee, home of the Tennessee Smokies, a Cubs farm team. Hopefully they play better than there major league affiliate, but I won’t hold my breath.
