Day 5: Butte, Montana

Click HERE to see photos from Day 5.

There aren't too many photos documenting today's trek because if we stopped, it just meant that it would take that much longer to get to Butte. Makes sense, right? We did shoot some video, which I'll put together after the trip.

Fun Fact #1: The new record price we paid for gas is $4.21 in Ashland, Montana. It was in the middle of nowhere and everyone says that when you see a gas station, you should top off. We heeded that message.
Fun Fact #2: The Indy Car 2007 has now amassed 1,507 miles on this trip. National Rental Car is going to lose money on this transaction. Thank the Lord for unlimited mileage.
Fun Fact #3: Montana covers 145,552 square miles of land. And with only 6.2 people living per square mile, it's also seems quite lonely to go with its massiveness.
Fun Fact #4: There was no Wendy's for 500 miles of this God-forsaken land.

Our plans changed today due to the ridiculously immense square mileage of the state of Montana. In order to both spend quality time with Julia's friend, Adrienne, in Butte and not collapse in instantaneous death from driving boredom and less sleep than usual, we had to switch it up. That means no baseball tonight in Missoula. I know, how un-America of us, especially me. We'll be hanging out in Butte with Adrienne, Dave, their three dogs and two cats. Many animals to pet - sweet. My friend, Elgy, would be in heaven.

We got up again at 6:30 and set out from Spearfish, South Dakota at 8 a.m. for the 500 mile jaunt to Butte, Montana. It seemed like we covered about 140,000 of those previously mentioned square miles over the course of the next eight hours. There is a reason Montana is called "Big Sky Country." Holy crap. It's the state of 1,000 landscapes - snow-capped mountains, pine forests, desert Badlands looking areas and grasslands to name a few. If you look dead ahead, all you see is land and sky. It's overwhelming and humbling at first, but after a while, you pray to all possible saints, even the lesser known ones, to eliminate the next 450 miles of land between you and your eventual destination.

Anyway, there's not much to post today since the change in plans, but we're taking a well deserved break from driving and hanging out in Butte with the pups and kitties. So here I sit on their front porch siphoning some poor neighbor's wireless connection. People are as stupid as animals. Unsecured wireless connections - how dumb.

As always, if you enjoy skipping to the bottom, click HERE to see photos from Day 5.

Next stop: Day 6 in Yellowstone National Park and the Helena Brewers.
