Day 7: Plymouth Rock and Acadia National Park

Here I am on Day 8 writing about Day 7. Let's see what my ancient A.D.D. infested brain matter can conjure.

We left Pawtucket for Plymouth Rock in Plymouth, Mass. Kids? Who knows what happened at Plymouth Rock? If you don't A) you need a punch in the face and B) so do your teachers. For landing on a rock, you'd probably expect it to be MUCH bigger. Well squash those thoughts because it's about as big as one of those rocks you see South City hoosiers and state streeters put on their lawns to pretend they are just as cool and rich as those uppity Ladue folks. And people have chiseled pieces off of it over the years, so now it resides in a cage. Someone goes in there daily and rakes the sand like a Zen garden. How do I get that job?
It's like the poor thing did something wrong.

We moved onward to Maine and Acadia National Park. From this day forward, I will always equate the state of Maine with Christmas. We got out of the car and the smell of Christmas trees permeates the air like...well...a Christmas tree lot, BUT ONLY ALL THE TIME! Rain was heading to the park faster than a locomotive, so we booked it down to the Bass Harbor Lighthouse to get some photos before it started to rain or got dark, whichever natural phenomenon came first. It was rain. But it waited until about a minute before we got back into the car to begin.

As we left the lighthouse, banshee rain came from on high. It was almost blinding - it was either the rain or the fact that I'm so spoiled by a beautifully Rain-Xed windshield that I can't live without it. We got dinner, which was just okay, but they brought out their dog after we finished and I pet him until he bled. Not really. He was the cleanest dog I've ever seen in my 454 months on this planet. He didn't shed a single hair and you didn't get that oily, cakey, dog hair sludge on your hands after petting him. This dog was truly the most hygienic of his kind.

We drove back to Bangor in the driving rain and various road construction hazards and got to our Four Points at the Bangor airport. This hotel was not made for the road tripper who brings a car with them. It's meant for the airline traveler. So much so that there are no signs outside or on the ground floor about anything. There's a bridge from the arrival gates to the hotel on the second floor, so that's where the useful info resides. Otherwise, you get to guess and we guessed wrong about 37 times.

We also decided, due to the fact that it was already 11 p.m. by the time we got to the room and we'd have to leave by 3 a.m. to get to Cadillac Mountain for the sunrise, that the sunrise was no longer a priority. Not only that, but the road construction was going on overnight, so that plus the driving rain, made it a no-brainer. We just decided to sleep a bit later and head to Acadia in the sunlight (or rain, if El Nino was still kicking it old school). And that biking thing? Out of the question. If a little bridge in Chicago kicks my arse, surely the roads at Acadia NP would have much less of a problem delivering a beating.
