Day 2: Denver, CO

Click HERE to see photos from Day 2.

Day 2 was all about the Rockies. Julia set her watch alarm to get us up at 7:30 a.m. The funny thing is that she didn't change it from Central time to Mountain, therefore, 7:30 was really 6:30. I can tell you that we weren't late for the game.

We drove the Multiple Hairpin Turn Journey of Death road during the day. Somehow, it wasn't nearly as bad as it seemed the night before. There are, however, "Avalanche Zone" signs along several portions of the road, so that was a bit frightening and we did see a few landslide areas.

Due to the previously mentioned watch alarm setting, we arrived at Coors Field at around 10:30 a.m. for the 1:05 game. We parked the car on one of those lots where you pay the machine and leave the receipt on the dashboard. I ran across the street to take a few photos of the stadium while Julia visited the machine to pay. It was $25 to park there so we left in search of a cheaper parking fare. Parking angels be praised, we found a free Sunday meter around the corner, thus saving $25. On to the ticket counter.

I was prepared to buy the $20-$32 tickets, but they didn't have any between first and third, so we managed to get the last row of section 314 in right field for only $10. They were covered and it was windy up there, so the 87 degree heat didn't matter. It was free hat day at the ballpark so that saved another $35. That's a total savings of about $120. Oh my stars.

Shortly after purchasing the tickets, I called B. Green to see what time she'd be arriving. It was then she said that she wasn't coming. Nice, B. Green. That's some great advanced warning. A few minutes later she called back, obviously feeling extreme amounts of guilt, and said she was coming but that she'd be late. Late = the seventh inning.

My observations of my six hours in Denver, Colorado today reveal that there seems to be an overabundance of the following:
  • mullets on both men and women
  • multiple tattoos inked on both men and women (some in odd places)
  • 80s-style ponytails on men
  • Dale Jr. t-shirts
  • wife beater shirts
  • cammo (just like everywhere else we've been)
  • jorts
In case you missed the link at the top, click HERE to see photos from the game and the lovely people with whom we were fortunate enough to share the experience.

After the game, we headed back to the Magill's in Fraser and went to dinner at Hernando's Pizza. It was tasty stuff. I think it might be second only to Giordano's in Chicago - it was that good. I was still eating when everyone else was finished. Apparently, I'm a big fat hog.

Next Stop: Day 3 in Casper, Wyoming

Day 1: Denver, CO

We're here in Denver, Colorado. Fraser, Colorado to be precise.

We landed so early, in fact, that nobody with orange glow sticks was there to guide our plane to the gate nor anyone to push the jet way up.

I got to the rental car counter and I was within inches of upgrading to a compact car, but decided against it. The gods were smiling because it turned out that they were out of economy cars and had to upgrade us to a compact for free. Free is good. As our Christian friends would say, "Oh my stars. What a bargain!"

We chose a Toyota Corolla - a 2007 version of my Indy car and cruised out of the Denver airport, which is smack dab in the middle of nowhere. I could have read War and Peace in less time than it took to ride the shuttle to the rental car lot.

We were famished due to the lack of quality eats aboard our flight so we stopped in Idaho Springs, Colorado for a quick bite and found the King's Derby Diner on the side of the road. It was tasty and cheap. It was also apparently a babysitting business as the waitress and cook were herding seven small children between hustling up grub and refilling my Dr. Pepper.

I just noticed that this is, by far, the most riveting post I've ever written.

After dinner, we headed to our accommodations for the night in Fraser, Colorado with the Magill's. Julia's mom has been out here already and warned us of the winding stretch of road on the way. Winding? Winding is the least descriptive word ever for the 20 mile path of death through the mountains. Darkness only made it worse. We'll see it in daylight today and film some of it for your viewing pleasure. Let's just call it the MHTJD or Multiple Hairpin Turn Journey of Death. Yeah, that's a bit more apt than "winding."

Anyway, so begin the photos. Don't get too excited. I'm only starting with two. Click HERE to see Day 1.

Tomorrow brings with it the Colorado Rockies game and Brittany Green. She's one of our new student managers at work and she's a punk. She lives in Denver and pretended she was interested in going to the game with us. She will rue the day.

As my friend Mega would say, "That's it. I'm done!"
